The Cardinals entered the Fall Classic having proven their mettle, overcoming a rash of early-season injuries and a 10 1/2-game deficit on Aug. 25 to sneak past the Braves in the National League Wild Card just to get into the postseason.< https://formedandfueled.com/ /p>
Happy 12-year anniversary of the David Freese game! As for this year’s World Series, the opener between the Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks is set for Friday evening on FOX 2. First pitch is scheduled for around 7 p.m. CT.
On a 1-2 count, Freese elevated a 98-mph fastball to deep right field, just out of the reach of Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz. The ball bounced off the “Gulf” advertisement on the outfield wall. Pujols and Berkman rushed home to score, and Freese ended up at third base with the game-tying triple, rocking the Busch Stadium crowd.
This was the third and final World Series title for Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who initially announced his retirement on October 31, 2011, after 33 seasons as a major league manager. This made him the first manager to end his career with a World Series win and with the most managerial victories (1,408) in franchise history. La Russa had previously led the Cardinals (2006) and Oakland Athletics (1989) to World Series championships. Former Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny, who played for the 2004 Cardinals that lost the World Series, was hired to replace him. He would be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. La Russa later came out of retirement and served as manager of the Chicago White Sox in 2021 and 2022.

For Freddie Freeman’s Game 1 walk-off grand slam, Fox broadcaster Joe Davis’ call of « …she is gone! » echoed that of legendary Dodgers and then-NBC broadcaster Vin Scully for Kirk Gibson’s Game 1 walk-off home run in the 1988 World Series; and Davis also added, « Gibby, meet Freddie! ».
All Cole allowed in six-plus scoreless innings was a Will Smith sacrifice fly after a Kiké Hernández triple in the fifth. Flaherty’s lone mistake in 5 1/3 innings was to a guy who has been punishing pitcher mistakes all postseason, as ALCS MVP Giancarlo Stanton took him deep with a two-run, 412-foot homer in the sixth to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
Yankees: The Yankees had to backfill Game 2 after Carlos Rodón registered only 10 outs. Jake Cousins (21 pitches), Tim Hill (14 pitches), Clay Holmes (23 pitches), and Mark Leiter Jr. (9 pitches) were all used, but an off-day between games helps. Cousins and Holmes also pitched in Game 1.
While he struggled in both his NLDS start against the Padres and his most recent NLCS start against the Mets — where he gave up eight earned runs and walked four in just three innings — he also delivered a scoreless performance in Game 1 of the NLCS, tossing seven innings and allowing only two hits.
Though it had been a long time since these baseball behemoths last met on this stage, the Dodgers and Yankees, facing each other for the 12th time, are the most common World Series opponents. These are the clubs that staged the first Subway Series, back when the Bronx Bombers defeated “Dem Bums” from Brooklyn mere months before the U.S. entered World War II. These are the franchises that battled each other while the Bronx was burning and Reggie Jackson was taking on the “Mr. October” moniker. These are the teams that last coexisted in the Fall Classic in 1981, when the Dodgers’ rotation was led by a rookie phenom named Fernando Valenzuela.

I’m 64 and have been embarrassed for years I don’t have a clue where most countries are on a world map. I tried out several apps before finding this one. I’m slowly learning where countries are on every continent. The app makes it fun, once I got through the first few lessons when I missed every answer! I’m also astonished at the size of some countries….who knew Ukraine was so huge compared to Vietnam? And Japan is so tiny. I’m well educated (three masters and two bachelors) and consider myself a lifetime learner, so I’m glad for this opportunity to continue learning at home all by myself.

College world series game
The 3-1 score held all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning, where Tennessee appeared to take control of the game with an emphatic three-run frame. CWS Most Outstanding Player Dylan Dreiling hit a towering two-run home run — his third in the CWS Finals — while Kavares Tears hit a ringing RBI double into right-centerfield. A fantastic relay by Jace LaViolette and Ali Camarillo led to the throw beating Hunter Ensley to the plate, but Ensley somehow got inside and around the tag of catcher Jackson Appel with a nifty juke-like move.
No team has won it more often than Southern California. The Trojans have 12 titles to their name, with the first coming in 1948, and the most recent in 1998. That also includes a stretch from 1968 to 1974, when USC won six of seven titles.
The College World Series started last week with eight teams, but Virginia, NC State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida State and Florida were knocked out before Tennessee and Texas A&M advanced to the finals.
“I think it’s attributed to the support that I get and the people that believe in me, the people that have my back and I can count on, like my parents or my brother” he said. “I can look to the stands, and they can give me, they can pound their chest, like you got this. That puts a lot of relaxation on my mind, kind of to ease down.”
Florida State took care of business today against Virginia to keep its season alive. After four thrilling games to open up the CWS, this was the lone result that was never really in doubt. Virginia’s Jay Woolfolk and FSU’s Carson Dorsey traded scoreless frames through the first two innings, but in the bottom of the third the ‘Noles got on the board thanks to a bases-loaded walk to James Tibbs III.
